From  Indian tribes to Chisolm Trail cowboys to stage coach robbers, Avery Ranch is abundantly rich with historical, archaeological and cultural significance as well as charm and beauty.

Tribes of Cherokee, Comanche and Tonkawa have left traces of their existence in the Avery Ranch area with Indian mounds, burned limestone markings and arrowheads; many still yet to be found. In the 1800s, as the Spanish explored the area, they attempted to strengthen the frontier against Indian attacks by building a military post near the headwaters of Brushy Creek. Remnants of the fort still adorn the hill country, adding much character to the Ranch.
